The 6 numbers to track every week to run your business
You do not need dozens of tables: six numbers are enough to know whether your business is doing well and where to act. Tracking them every week changes how you decide.
1. Revenue
The total of your sales over the period. Compare it with the previous week or month, and the same time last year: the trend matters more than the isolated figure.
2. Number of tickets
How many customers bought. Revenue rising with fewer tickets signals customers buying more; the opposite means footfall to win back.
3. Average basket
Revenue divided by the number of tickets. To raise it: offer a complementary product, a bundle, a small extra at the till.
4. Margin
What you earn after removing the cost of goods sold. It pays your costs and your income. Track it per product and as a percentage.
5. Expenses
Rent, transport, electricity, salaries, phone, small purchases. Compare them with your margin: if they exceed it, the business is losing money.
6. Credit owed
How much your customers owe you. An amount that grows every week is a warning sign for your cash flow.
