Preventing till theft and fraud: 8 simple rules for a shop

The great majority of sellers are honest, but a till without rules gives everyone the chance to make a mistake or be tempted. A few simple rules protect your money and your employees.

The most common frauds

  • A sale not recorded: the customer pays, the sale is not noted, the money disappears.
  • A discount or price changed without authorisation.
  • A sale cancelled after payment.
  • Credit given to a relative without recording it.
  • Theft of goods, often hidden behind a stock-count error.

Eight rules that protect the till

  • One account per seller with a personal code: never a shared account.
  • Limit permissions: only the manager changes prices, gives discounts or cancels a sale.
  • A receipt for every sale, which the customer can ask for.
  • Count the till at opening and closing, every day.
  • Take stock regularly and compare it with the theoretical stock.
  • Separate roles: the person who takes the money is not the one who counts or orders.
  • Check cancellations and discounts every week.
  • Talk about the rules with your team: a known rule already deters.

Staying fair with your team

A discrepancy is not proof of theft: change mistakes and forgotten sales are more common. Look for the source first, talk to the seller, and never accuse without evidence.

Using Kaislo’s permissions and traceability

Each seller has a number and a PIN code; you choose what they can do (discounts, price changes). Every sale keeps the seller’s name, the time and the payment method, and the evening closing shows the cash discrepancy. You can deactivate a seller in one gesture.

Frequently asked questions

Preventing till theft and fraud: 8 simple rules for a shop

How do you know if a seller is not recording sales?

Compare the stock that went out with the recorded sales: stock falling without a recorded sale is a signal. A regular stock count reveals it.

Should you install cameras?

They can deter, but do not replace clear rules, limited permissions and a closing every evening.
